Crazy Feet & Hair Day at Oak!

Principal's Message

Dear Oak families,

Yesterday, Oak Cougars joined millions others, nationwide and worldwide in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill. Students practiced the life-saving Drop, Cover, and Hold On technique, followed by a safe evacuation to the assembly area. Our staff also honed their emergency response procedures to ensure everyone's safety in a real event.

As we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, we want to remind you of an essential step:
  •  Please ensure your emergency contact information is up-to-date with the school.
It's crucial that we have accurate names and phone numbers for individuals authorized to pick up your child in case of an emergency. This includes family members, close friends, or designated caregivers.

Remember: Even if you've developed strong friendships within the Oak community (and we know about it!), we cannot release your child to anyone who is not listed on your emergency contact sheet. This is a strict policy to safeguard the safety of all our students.

If you don't have family nearby, we encourage you to get involved in our PTA and family events. Building connections with other Oak families can provide invaluable support and peace of mind. I personally experienced the benefits of these relationships for my children and know how they can make a significant difference in times of need.

October 17th marks the 37th anniversary of the devastating 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake. Anniversaries like this serve as a powerful reminder that Californians must be prepared. Empower yourself and your loved ones! Visit Earthquake.ca.gov and EarthquakeCountry.org for free resources and preparedness tips.

And NOW we pivot to WALKING! Don’t forget tomorrow is our Annual WALKATHON! We start walking at 9:00am!

See You in the Morning at 9am!

Wear your walking shoes and your Walkathon T-Shirt!

Bring your water bottles and your Cougar Spirit - Oak Field & Blacktop - 9am-Noon!

Unity Day 2026 is Wednesday, October 21!

Unity Day is a day when students and schools stand together to show that bullying is not okay and everyone deserves to feel safe, included, and respected.  You can learn more at the Official Unity Day website.

 Wear orange to show support.
 Be kind and include everyone.
Stand up against bullying and tell a trusted adult if someone is being hurt.
Celebrate differences and treat everyone with respect.

SPOOKTACULAR
In other news, our 6th grade students(and their families!) have been working hard on bringing you a truly spectacular SPOOKTACULAR! Mark your calendars for October 30th, 2:30p-6:00p Please plan to attend and support the class of 2027. We promise you an evening of thrills and treats.

Oak Halloween parade
Our annual Oak Halloween parade will take place on Friday, October 30th, on the blacktop at 9:00a. Families are invited to watch from the middle of the blacktop during our parade, as students take laps around the blacktop.

Students can wear their costumes at school for the rest of the day or bring a bag to store it for the day. Having a costume that’s easy to put on, or one that can be slipped on over clothes, is a good idea.

Finally, as always, students should not wear any gory, inappropriate, or overly gruesome costumes to school. Please, masks that cover the entire face (it restricts vision!), and weapons of any kind are not allowed. Hope you can join us!

Aayush Wins International Photo Award!

We are thrilled to share that Oak 6th Grader, Aayush G, has received the Highly Commended award in the 10 Years and Under category at Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2026, organized by the Natural History Museum, London.

This year, the competition attracted an extraordinary 65,403 entries from around the world, with only 100 photographs recognized across all categories, representing 21 countries.

To see Aayush’s photograph recognized by an esteemed international jury of wildlife photographers, scientists, and conservationists is an incredible honor.

What makes this moment even more special is Aayush’s journey. At a young age, his curiosity about birds and wildlife has grown into a passion for photography, storytelling, and conservation. Through his lens, he hopes to inspire others, especially children, to appreciate the beauty of nature and understand why it deserves our protection. Keep exploring, keep learning, and keep inspiring, Aayush!

Library Corner

By Mrs. Forrest
We have an author visit coming up for grades TK-3rd next week. We are hosting Devin Kurtz next Thursday, October 22nd, right after lunch. She writes the Bakery Dragon series and is coming to introduce The Bakery Dragon and the Giant Cookie. Please support this free event by purchasing a copy of the book from Linden Tree. See the flyer attached. Purchased copies will be signed at the event.

Library lessons this week included books about Autumn and locating books in the library.  In the upper grades, we read about Curiosity, the Mars rover and read about running in preparation for the Walkathon.

56 students participated in our summer reading program! Students received their summer reading prizes this week. I hope your student thought it was worth the wait. If your student already read the book or would like to pick out something else, you are welcome to exchange the book at Linden Tree bookstore in Downtown Los Altos. The store sticker is on the back of the book. Thank you for encouraging summer reading!

Newly added to the student Clever library resources section is Mango Languages. If your student would like to learn a language, they can log in as a guest from their student Clever page.

We started a new mystery picture in the library! To encourage reading, I have the kids add stickers for books read to reveal a mystery picture at the end of the school year. For K-1st, any book read by the student or to the student qualifies for a sticker to put on our picture. For 2nd and 3rd, the student needs to read a 100+ page book. For 4th-6th, students need to read a 250+ page book. This is just another way to encourage more reading.

You can still sign your students up for Birthday Book Club via the Oak Classroom Parent website: oak.classroomparent.com. Look for the tiny store icon along the top bar.

How to visit the Oak School’s Library Catalog via Destiny Discover:

Choose California, type in Los Altos School District, and Oak Avenue Elementary School in Los Altos. There are multiple Oak Avenue Schools, so make sure you pick the one in Los Altos. This puts you directly into the Oak Library Catalog, which shows all the books the Oak Library owns. Click Go! You can browse the collection by topic, genre, grade level, etc. You can search for a specific book title or author. You don’t need to log in to do any of these searches. However if you do want to put a book on hold or read one of our ebooks, you will need to log in.
To log in, click on the login button at the top right. Enter this year’s google username and password that you use to log in to your school google account and submit. Search for the book you are looking for and put it on hold. Mrs. Forrest will pull the book for you and have it waiting for you in the library during the school year. No summer holds available.

Student Access to Santa Clara County Library

All LASD students (unless parents opted out), have a student account through the Santa Clara County Library District, aka, the Los Altos Public Library. This student account offers access to eBooks, research resources, homework help, and much more.

To access the website, go to: https://student.sccld.org
You will be asked to provide an Account Number and PIN. The Account Number is S + Student ID + LASD (no spaces in between). The student ID is a unique 5 digit number provided by LASD. It is the same number as your student’s Powerschool number and is embedded in their school email address. The number is provided when you receive district communications specific to your student. The PIN is the student’s birth month and day (again no spaces). If the birth month or day is only one number, add a zero in front of it.

For Example:
Account Number: S12345LASD
PIN: 0114 (for January 14th)

There are also resource links on the Oak School website under Programs/Library.
Please contact Mrs. Forrest at cforrest@lasdschools.org if you have specific requests, have any questions, or have difficulty accessing your account.

Witches' Delight at Santa Rita - Oct 24!

Another spooky event for the LASD community is the annual Witches' Delight Carnival at Santa Rita!  All are welcome - see below for details.

New! Online Payments Through PowerSchool

LASD families now have the option to make online payments directly through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Families can use PowerSchool to conveniently pay student-related fees and charges, including field trips, lost or damaged materials, and other school-related expenses.

When selecting the payment option in PowerSchool, you will be directed to eFunds, the district’s third-party payment provider. Families will need to create an eFunds account before making their first payment. Once your account is set up, payments can be made by credit card or ACH/bank transfer. A small processing fee will apply. Families who prefer to pay by check may continue to do so directly through the Oak office.
Please note: Donations to PTA and LAEF should not be made through PowerSchool.

Accessing Online Payments
To access payments, log in to your PowerSchool Parent Portal using the email address you used when registering your child with LASD. If you have forgotten your password, select “Forgot Password” on the login screen.
If you do not have access to your PowerSchool Parent Portal account, please contact powerschoolsupport@lasdschools.org for assistance.

Instructions for using the eFunds online payment system are also available to help families get started.  You can find instructions on how to use the eFunds online payment system here.
We know how busy family life can be, and we hope this new option makes handling school-related payments a little easier. As always, if you have questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Oak office. We’re happy to help!
