Dear Oak Community,
We are beginning to see a seasonal increase in ILI (influenza-like illness) across our school sites. Please help us reduce the spread of illness by keeping students home when they are sick.
When to Keep Your Student Home
For all flu-like and respiratory illnesses, students should stay home until all the following are true:
- At least 24 hours have passed since symptom onset
- Symptoms are mild and improving
- They have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
Reporting Absences
Parents or guardians must report all absences or late arrivals by 9:00 a.m. on the day of the absence. You may use one of the following methods:
Please include your child’s full name, teacher, reason for absence, and expected return date, if known.

Boyd is a four-year-old golden retriever and the Los Altos Police Department’s first facility dog. The department applied through Canine Companions, a nonprofit that trains service and facility dogs free of charge, and Boyd joined the department in November 2024 after completing two weeks of training with his new handlers.
Today, Boyd works alongside Corporal Vernon on patrol, helps children and adults feel more at ease during difficult calls and interviews, and visits schools and community events where residents can get to know their local officers.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an engaging and thoughtful conversation about technology and artificial intelligence in our schools!
We appreciated the great questions, meaningful dialogue, and opportunity to explore how technology can support student learning while keeping well-being, critical thinking, and student agency at the center.

A special thank you to Grace Choi, Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction, for leading this informative discussion and sharing LASD’s approach to technology and AI.

November is a wonderful time to celebrate the people and little moments that make our Oak community so special! This month, through our Character Strong curriculum, our students will be focusing on Gratitude—recognizing and appreciating the people, experiences, and everyday moments that bring joy and meaning to our lives.
Gratitude is more than simply saying "thank you." It is about noticing the kindness around us, appreciating the little things we sometimes take for granted, and recognizing the ways we support and care for one another.
I encourage you to continue these conversations at home. Ask your child what made them smile today, who helped them this week, or how they might show appreciation to someone else. These simple conversations help children develop empathy, strengthen relationships, and recognize the good in the world around them.
Thank you,
Nikita

What a fun and festive Halloween at our school! From TK all the way up through 6th grade, the creative costumes and parade brought so much energy and excitement to campus.
A huge thank you to all of our amazing classroom parents for hosting wonderful room parties and making the day extra special for our students.
Finally, a big shoutout to our 6th-grade class for all their hard work putting on this year’s Spooktacular! Thank you to everyone in our community who helped make the festivities such a success.

Come join Sandi Elefant this Saturday, November 7th, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to help us get our Oak gardens ready for Fall!
Beyond being a beautiful space on campus, these gardens are a vibrant outdoor classroom that enrich our Living Classroom lessons and bring so much joy to students as they learn hands-on.
We'd love your help to keep them thriving! This is a great opportunity to help maintain Oak's beauty and nurture a love of nature in our young learners and we hope to see many of you bright and early!

Let’s get moving! Our dedicated volunteers encourage walking, biking, and carpooling all year long with monthly morning celebrations featuring treats and prizes.
Mark your calendars for our upcoming WoW Day on Thursday, November 12th—we encourage all Oak Avenue families to participate!

What happens when students lead their own learning and dive deeply into a question that matters to them, and share their voices in powerful ways? Illuminate LASD invites students to become experts, innovators, and change-makers.
Whether it’s researching a topic they’re passionate about, solving a problem that inspires them, or creating something to make an impact, students will share the artifacts that highlight the learning process. From TK to 8th grade, Illuminate LASD invites students to share what they now know and can do by sharing the process and products of their learning on Friday, February 26th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM.
We invite you to share in this experience that connects student curiosity, creativity, and agency!

We are excited to announce our annual LASD Student Art Showcase. This is an opportunity for any student from TK-8th grade to express themselves artistically with our community.
Students are encouraged to submit a piece of artwork in the medium and theme of their choice, following the guidelines in the advertisement. Registration closes on November 11th. Please use this Google Form to register and each out to Kimberly Dickerson (kdickerson@lasdschools.org) with any questions.
LASD Student Art Showcase will be on display at Covington Elementary on November 18th 5:00-7:00 pm. This event will celebrate student art and local artists, and offer the opportunity to enjoy an evening together as an LASD community.

As you may have seen Los Altos School District’s ParentSquare newsletter, they are bringing all volunteer screening into one consistent, districtwide process to stay compliant with new state laws while preserving the welcoming and volunteer culture that makes our schools so special.
We highly encourage all of our volunteers to follow the LASD approved volunteer process. For those interested in beginning the process to becoming a volunteer, please visit the link https://www.lasdschools.org/volunteer.

Library lessons this week included reading books about voting, more Fall and pumpkin books, and learning about the Nonfiction 600’s section in Kinder, practicing fiction shelf order to the first letter in 1st grade, watching a Dewey video in 2nd, and playing a dictionary scavenger hunt in 3rd. In the upper grades, we read books about the constitution and a biography about Margery Williams, the author of The Velveteen Rabbit.
Newly added to the student Clever library resources section is Mango Languages. If your student would like to learn a language, they can log in as a guest from their student Clever page.
We started a new mystery picture in the library! To encourage reading, I have the kids add stickers for books read to reveal a mystery picture at the end of the school year. For K-1st, any book read by the student or to the student qualifies for a sticker to put on our picture. For 2nd and 3rd, the student needs to read a 100+ page book. For 4th-6th, students need to read a 250+ page book. This is just another way to encourage more reading.
You can still sign your students up for Birthday Book Club via the Oak Classroom Parent website: oak.classroomparent.com. Look for the tiny store icon along the top bar.
How to visit the Oak School’s Library Catalog via Destiny Discover:
Choose California, type in Los Altos School District, and Oak Avenue Elementary School in Los Altos. There are multiple Oak Avenue Schools, so make sure you pick the one in Los Altos. This puts you directly into the Oak Library Catalog, which shows all the books the Oak Library owns. Click Go! You can browse the collection by topic, genre, grade level, etc. You can search for a specific book title or author. You don’t need to log in to do any of these searches. However if you do want to put a book on hold or read one of our ebooks, you will need to log in.
To log in, click on the login button at the top right. Enter this year’s google username and password that you use to log in to your school google account and submit. Search for the book you are looking for and put it on hold. Mrs. Forrest will pull the book for you and have it waiting for you in the library during the school year. No summer holds available.
Student Access to Santa Clara County Library
All LASD students (unless parents opted out), have a student account through the Santa Clara County Library District, aka, the Los Altos Public Library. This student account offers access to eBooks, research resources, homework help, and much more.
You will be asked to provide an Account Number and PIN. The Account Number is S + Student ID + LASD (no spaces in between). The student ID is a unique 5 digit number provided by LASD.
|
It is the same number as your student’s Powerschool number and is embedded in their school email address. The number is provided when you receive district communications specific to your student. The PIN is the student’s birth month and day (again no spaces). If the birth month or day is only one number, add a zero in front of it. |
Account Number: S12345LASD
PIN: 0114 (for January 14th)
There are also resource links on the Oak School website under Programs/Library.
Please contact Mrs. Forrest at cforrest@lasdschools.org if you have specific requests, have any questions, or have difficulty accessing your account.
